Mountain Getaway–Part 2

by Megan on August 27, 2013

Last Friday I made my return to Asheville, the place that I spent my college years.  It had been a long time since my last visit and I was crazy excited about going back to spend a weekend there.

Most people head to Asheville to eat at the trendy restaurants and explore the arts scene.  But me?  I mainly wanted to revisit some of my old favorites and take in everything that had changed since I graduated.

After checking into our hotel we spent some time wandering around downtown Asheville.  I have to say, it hasn’t changed a bit.  Well, except for the Urban Outfitters that I spotted on a corner – that definitely wasn’t around back in my hey-day.

We hit up Barley’s for dinner and then Danny wanted to visit the double decker ice cream bus (that he remembered from our last trip years ago).

Saturday morning we headed back over to UNC-Asheville for a visit.  Never in my life have I felt so old.  I kept looking around saying, “That is new” and “Holy crap, this place has changed so much.”

After leaving UNCA we had no plans at all.  We spent some time in Biltmore Village wandering around and then randomly decided to go to Biltmore Estate.  I have been a few times, but, Danny had never seen it and I thought he would enjoy the tour.

We added on a bonus behind the scenes architects tour to our admission ticket and it was well worth the cost.  Part of the tour included going onto the roof of the house.

I thought this was totally neat, but, when I turned to express this to Danny, he was kind of freaking out about the heights. (Editors Note: I have just been informed that he was not “freaking out” so much as looking down so as to avoid taking in any of the scenery associated with being up so high).

After a quick dinner at Asheville Pizza & Brewing and a stop for dessert at French Broad Chocolate Lounge, we headed back to the room exhausted.  For a day that started out with no plans, it turned into a pretty jam packed day.

We left very early on Sunday morning so that we would get back in time to pick up Sherlock and finish getting our house ready for Gracie post-ACL surgery.  Back to reality.

The double decker ice cream bus is exactly that, a two level bus that has been repurposed into a place that sells ice cream. They have seating on the second level and also a courtyard outside where it is permanently parked. One of those, “only in Asheville” things I think.

It probably is just shocked because I get like 3 comments a year on the blog.
