Holiday Hangover

by Megan on January 1, 2013

At the risk of sounding like a total grinch, I have been totally over this holiday season since, oh, about 8pm on Christmas Eve.

(Taken during our visit to Enchanted Airlie in early December – back when our life was much more low key)

It was right around that time that we noticed a strange gurgling sound coming from all of the toilets in our house. Further inspection revealed things backflowing into the drains of our tubs/showers that you just really shouldn’t ever have to witness. Awful.

Since it was Christmas Eve, were were pretty much screwed in terms of getting a plumber out to the house to help us with this issue. The day after Christmas it was pouring down rain, but, luckily we found someone willing to come out and take a look. God bless that man for going underneath our house in the middle of a monsoon. While he was around, he also noticed that our hot water heater (that we replaced right after moving in) was leaking and going bad. On the upside, he was able to replace it that day and it was still under warranty.

Due to the new furry child in the family, we have been operating on a major sleep deficit. Crate training is just not going well. At all. Sherlock whines for about 1.5 hours after we put him to bed (which is usually around 10:30pm). Around 2:30AM he starts up again, which is when I take him outside to use the bathroom. Sometimes he settles back down and sleeps until 5:30 or so…and sometimes he doesn’t. Hopefully this issue gets solved soon.

(He’s lucky that he is super cute and snuggly. He also smells like stale urine – but, that’s a story for another blog post entirely).

Our Christmas decorations were taken down the day after Christmas (once we had working plumbing/running water and were able to actually do things like shower).  It kind of sucks that we don’t have any more time off to look forward to until April – but, maybe getting back into a routine will be nice.

Hopefully by next December our life will have stabilized a bit and we will be able to enjoy a relaxing holiday season.  This year was one to remember – but, definitely was not even slightly relaxing.
